The Natural Interactive Systems Laboratory (NISLab) is part of the
Faculty of Science and Engineering at University of Southern Denmark, Main
Campus Odense, Denmark.
We do research in systems that communicate with their users in the same ways as humans communicate with each other,
i.e. through speech, gesture, facial expression, gaze, posture, object manipulation, etc. Our research on such
natural interactive systems addresses spoken language dialogue
systems, multimodal systems, such as computer games including speech, animated conversational agents, language teaching
systems, tools for annotating natural interactivity data, design support tools for usability engineering, and multimodal
and natural interactive systems evaluation.
At NISLab we emphasise the development of theory, concepts, methods and
software tools in close interaction with the practical systems
development. We are strongly involved in European projects and
international research and regularly contribute to research strategy at
European level. NISLab has close collaborations with European and
national companies.
Teaching at NISLab is based on our research. We offer, together with the mathematics and computer science institute IMADA,
an education in computer science (dat-nis) which emphasises the interaction between theoretical and practical computer science.
The education gives the students a broad competence within systems development and software engineering. In the later parts
of the education there are rich possibilities for focusing on some of the many exciting research topics in the natural
interactive systems field.
